Clara Schumann fue una niña prodigio pianista, compositora hija de una famosa cantante y un reconocido maestro de piano y vendedor de partituras. Robert Schumann el futuro marido de Clara tomó clases con su padre después de escuchar y admirar la interpretación de Clara. Robert se lastima la mano pensando que así lograría más destreza como pianista, pero logra todo lo contrario por lo que Clara es la que interpreta sus composiciones . Robert sufre un colapso mental e intenta suicidarse por lo cual es ingresado en un sanatorio.
Clara Schumann tuvo relaciones amistosas profundas con hombres que la admiraron profundamente y uno de ellos fue Johannes Brahms con el cual tuvo una relación intelectual y artística que adquirió tonos amorosos. Esta es una composición de Brahms sobre un tema de Schuman dedicado a Clara.
